On Sept. 22, several Phoenix area museums are offering free entry as part of the Smithsonian magazine's 14th annual Museum Day. Learn more and print free tickets at Smithsonian.com/museumday.

Also, the Phoenix Art Museum offers free entry for families on Sunday, Sept. 9 and kids through Sept. 30th.

Sept. 8: Start of free fall concert series at Scottsdale Quarter

Favorite Valley bands take the stage as part of Scottsdale Quarter's free fall concert series. Live music can be heard every Saturday through Oct. 27. The first concert features Rock Lobster, an '80s cover band. Upcoming acts include: Crown Kings, Vinyl Station, British Invasion and DJ Dean.

Sept. 8: Children's Learning & Play Festival

Children's authors and illustrators, live music, performers, a play zone, inflatables, rides, storytelling and sing-alongs, puppet shows and life-sized dinosaurs are part of this all-day festival.

Sept. 8-9: Free admission to Arizona Science Center

The Arizona Science Center is offering free weekend admission courtesy of Fry's Food Stores. The all-day entry includes access to all the galleries and shows in the planetarium with hands-on demonstrations and make-and-take activities. A ride in the Evans Family SkyCycle, which suspends riders 15 feet in the air is $5. 

Because of the event's popularity, guests are advised to expect heavy crowds, register online and print tickets to bring to the event.

Sept. 9: Phoenix Art Museum Free Family Sunday

General admission to the Phoenix Art Museum is waived on the second Sunday of each month, thanks to Discount Tire. Free Family Sunday also features scavenger hunts, story time, tours, live performances and more. The theme for the Sept. 9 event is “Elements.”

Sept. 14: See 'The Incredibles' at CityScape

The fall series, "City Lights Movie Nights," returns with a series of free, outdoor movie nights on the second Friday of every month through December. First up is "The Incredibles." Guests are encouraged to bring their own chairs and arrive about 15 minutes early to find a spot before the movie begins. The evening also includes prizes and contests at every showing. Upcoming movies are: "Coco" on Oct. 12, "The Greatest Showman" on Nov. 9 and "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" and "Home Alone" on Dec. 14.

Sept. 14: Mesa Arts Center 2018 Season Kick-Off Festival

Come celebrate the new season at Mesa Arts Center with live music across three stages. Enjoy performances by Sidewalk Chalk and their combo of hip-hop, jazz and funk. Also performing are: the Dennis Rowland Band with Jesse McGuire; Blaise Lantana; The Let Freedom Swing All Stars and others. The family-friendly event also features art activities, food vendors and artist demos.

Sept. 22: Free admission to SMoCA

As part of the Smithsonian magazine's 14th annual Museum Day, the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art is free all day.

Free admission is available to two people by downloading a ticket at Smithsonian.com/museumday. A “Get A Ticket” button will appear on the Smithsonian website and you will be asked to enter your name, email address and confirm the museum you wish to attend before downloading your ticket. One ticket per email address is permitted.

A handful of other participating museums include: Arizona Museum of Natural Historyin Mesa; Pueblo Grande Museum in Phoenix; i.d.e.a. Museum in Mesa.

Sept. 22: Phoenix Children’s Festival

This event for kiddos ages 3-12 features a Diaper Derby for Tots, themed Fun Zones, character visits, food trucks and more. Attendees can support the Back to School Clothing Drive with donations of school supplies or money.

Sept. 23: Sunday in the Park Food Truck Festival

Fans of food trucks will find plenty of tasty options at this festival in Surprise. In addition to scrumptious food, the family event features live music by The Sugar Thieves.

Sept. 29: Coding & networking workshops

Open to kids of any age, but ideal for ages 7-17, CactusCon is hosting a full day of  workshops on soldering, coding, basic networking, drones and lock picking. The final event is an escape room with themed puzzles.

Through Sept. 30: Phoenix Art Museum's Free summer admission for kids

Now through Sept. 30, children younger than 18 are invited to visit the Phoenix Art Museum for free. Current exhibits include, "To Be Thirteen," which chronicles the lives of 250 13-year-olds across the country through photography and video. Also on exhibit is "In the Company of Women," featuring the work of women artists including Frida Kahlo, Georgia O’Keeffe, Faith Ringgold and Erica Deeman. The special admission was made possible by a Steele Foundation grant. The foundation provides education funding to nonprofits that safeguard children from abuse, neglect and hunger.
